Elon Musk’s takeover of the X platform, formerly known as Twitter, has been wrought with controversy as the billionaire provocateur opened the floodgates allowing for free speech and transparency on the inner workings of the social media site. This change in strategy has caused many on the left to attempt to bring the prolific poster down and destroy what has become a bastion of free thought and speech.

Recently, left-wing group Media Matters has come gunning for Elon, releasing a report claiming that the social media site displays pro-Nazi content and other detestable speech next to big-name advertisers. In typical form, this has caused an exodus of paid advertisers from the site, negatively affecting the social media platforms’ bottom line.

However, thanks to the seemingly endless resources at the hands of Elon Musk, he is choosing not to go down without a fight. Finally, someone can go after the left-wing censorship machine with tangible legal actions.

Looking for trouble

In response to a Media Matters for America report alleging that X displays major advertiser ads next to white supremacist content, Elon Musk and the X Corporation released a statement.

Elon Musk wrote:

“The split second court opens on Monday, X Corp will be filing a thermonuclear lawsuit against Media Matters and ALL those who colluded in this fraudulent attack on our company.”

The accompanying X Corp statement claims that Media Matters “completely misrepresented the real user experience” to “mislead advertisers,” which appears to have worked. Since the release of the report, IBM, Lionsgate, Paramount, Apple, and Disney have announced pulling their paid advertisements from the site.

The statement continues to explain how internal records at X prove that Media Matters reporters created an account on X specifically to find white supremacist content. Once discovered, they allege that they can prove the reporters would “repeatedly” refresh their feed specifically to find “rare instances” of ads found next to white supremacist content.

As an X Corp executive explained:

“Ads follow the people on X, in this case the Media Matters research that was going to actively look for this content – that’s how user targeting works.”

Essentially, you get what you look for when it comes to X and, in general, any online medium. This is similar to when a user passively searches for new slipper socks on Amazon or Pinterest; for example, they will subsequently start seeing advertisements for them on their Facebook and Instagram feeds.

True agenda

To break down what Elon Musk and X Corp claim has happened, users went out specifically looking for content related to white supremacy and then hyper-focused on that type of content to make it appear that there was a preponderance of white supremacy content next to everyday advertisers.

This allegation makes it seem as though X Corp and, by extension, Elon Musk are advocating for the tenets behind pro-Nazi and other such content to their users.

However, the data tells a very different story. Mr. Musk points out that of the 5.5 billion advertisements on X seen daily, only 50 contain any content mentioned in the report.

That isn’t just less than 1% of the content. It’s virtually the equivalent of a grain of sand.

Media Matters for America touts on their website that they:

“…monitor a cross-section of print, broadcast, cable, radio, and Internet media outlets for conservative misinformation – news or commentary that is not accurate, reliable, or credible and that forwards the conservative agenda…”

They were the same organization whose president, Angelo Carusone, said media companies were right to block The New York Post’s accurate, reliable, and credible reporting on Hunter Biden.

More speech, not less

In X Corp’s statement, they write:

“Without freedom of speech, we lose the checks and balances critical to a thriving democracy. We must defend our individual rights as if our lives, and flourishing society, depend on it. If you’re really in on protecting free speech, then we all need to protect it completely.”

The statement goes on to pledge:

“X will protect the public’s right to free expression. We will not allow agenda-driven activists, or even our own profits, to deter our vision.”

Hate speech and speech that is disagreeable shouldn’t be silenced. Hiding this speech isn’t just a slippery slope toward the ruin of democracy, but it also doesn’t accomplish the intended goal of fighting hate and tyranny.

Suppose society is unwilling to face hate speech and hateful content. In that case, society is ill-equipped to defend alternative viewpoints to such hate.

Elon Musk wrote:

“…for speech to be truly free, we must also have the freedom to see or hear things that some people may consider objectionable. We believe that everyone has the right to make up their own minds about what to read, watch, or listen to – because that’s the power of freedom of speech.”

It’s a new dawn for free speech and lovers of democracy everywhere, thanks to the fortitude and abilities of those like Elon Musk.
