MSNBC host Joy Reid went on a rant against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, suggesting he is turning the Sunshine State into a veritable hell on Earth.

And … It. Sounds. Awesome.

Reid began her diatribe on Tuesday’s show by spreading falsehoods that teachers could face felony charges for having the wrong books in their classrooms.

“Teachers who display or give a student a book deemed unallowed could face up to five years in prison,” Reid said.

“You heard that right. Five years in prison for handing a child a book,” she added, suggesting the book The Life of Rosa Parks falls under that umbrella.

MSNBC’s @JoyAnnReid: ” @GovRonDeSantis is turning Fla. into a right-wing paradise where the focus isn’t on healthcare or jobs or taxes or infrastructure or … but rather on the right-wing culture wars … Like Disney World, but in hell. Come to Fla., the meanest place on Earth” pic.twitter.com/94J6QPcXdL

Let’s Start With All the Misstatements

Joy Reid continued her attack against the Florida governor by adding a few more provable lies to the pile.

“Not only is he banning books about history and any mention of the existence of gay people from Florida schools, he’s barring public high schools from teaching AP African American studies,” she said.

What DeSantis is banning are studies that interject a political agenda or force inappropriate material on certain aged students. The AP African American course falls into that category. The College Board essentially admitted to the inappropriate material, removing critical race theory and references to queer identity.

Furthermore, there is no ban on mentioning gay people in schools. Reid is referencing the complete fantasy from the media that there is a ‘Don’t Say Gay’ law in Florida.

In reality, DeSantis signed parental rights legislation that restricts teachers and school districts from giving classroom instruction on “sexual orientation” or “gender identity” in kindergarten through third grade. (As always, one must ask why anyone would be so incessant on forcing these sexual lessons on very small children.)

As for the felony charges for inappropriate books – the Washington Post article she is referencing as the basis for her rant had to be corrected after the Florida Department of Education set them straight.

The article now reflects the fact that felony charges would come from an “older” law involving “obscene and pornographic materials” distributed to minors and “would not apply to less obscene books such as The Life of Rosa Parks.”

Florida Department of Education communications director Alex Lanfranconi accused the media of spreading misinformation and said the prospect of a teacher facing a felony charge for providing a ‘disallowed book’ to students is “blatantly untrue.”

But other than all of that, Joy Reid’s report was factually sound.

Joy Reid’s Description of Florida Sounds Pretty Good

Joy Reid ended her invective against Florida by ticking off all the reasons why the state is supposedly a hell hole. And quite honestly, it all sounds pretty good.

She accused DeSantis of “turning Florida into a right-wing paradise.”

“He’s taking aim at drag performances, even suggesting that he would urge the state’s child protective services to investigate parents who take their own kids to one,” Reid explained.

Gotta say, Florida sounds pretty damn awesome. https://t.co/6RUwQnt1WN

“He’s actively trying to ban COVID vaccine mandates and restricting mask rules while at the same time calling for probes into supposed wrongdoing linked to the vaccine,” Reid continued.

“And he’s doing all of this while making sure that anyone can walk around with a gun, no permit required.”

Reid concluded that Florida is “a right-wing fantasy land — like Disney World but in hell,” adding: “Come to Florida, the meanest place on Earth.”

Yes, please. We’ll take more of this on steroids.

By the way, Joy, Florida is such a hellhole that people are fleeing blue states in massive numbers to get there. Florida saw its population grow by 319,000 in 2022.

Why would people actively choose to go to the “meanest place on Earth”?

Probably because they’re trying to combat inappropriate material in schools, fighting back against drag shows in front of kids, banning vaccine and mask mandates, and sticking up for the Second Amendment.

Throw in no income tax and Florida really is a fantasy land. What America is supposed to be.
