Connecticut high school boys have flexed their teenage rebellious muscles by ripping a tampon machine from the walls of their bathroom. Thanks to state law, public schools in the Constitution State must install a tampon dispenser in at least one male bathroom.
To the surprise of literally nobody who has ever been a teenager, boys in one Connecticut high school took matters into their own hands and ripped the dispenser from the wall in an act that the principal dubbed “egregious vandalism”. Luckily, these teenage heroes aren’t facing jail time…yet.
Some might argue that the school had it coming; after all, teenage boys aren’t known for their innate maturity. Still, this generation of young men, particularly this group of young Nutmeggers, might be wise beyond their years.
Record time
It took about twenty minutes after installing a state-mandated tampon dispenser to be ripped from the walls of a Connecticut high school boys’ bathroom. The installation of a menstruation product in a men’s bathroom is due to a state law requiring its inclusion.
The law states:
“…each local and regional board of education shall provide free menstrual products available in women’s restrooms, all-gender restrooms and at least one men’s restroom, which restrooms are accessible to students in grades three to twelve.”

While men do use tampons in the event of an extremely bloody nose, the primary use of a tampon or other menstrual products is to collect the effects of menstruation, which is a uniquely female process.
The principal of Brookfield High School, Marc Balanda, wrote:
“I am aware that the law says “men’s bathroom” but the actions today that led to vandalism and destruction of property were the work of immature boys, not men.”
It’s interesting how quickly the principal jerks the knee to gender the alleged culprits of this vandalism. Who is to say the individuals who tore down the dispenser weren’t transgender boys (otherwise known as girls) exercising their lived reality of teenage boy rebellion? What is a boy, and how do they have unique characteristics like immaturity?
Vandalism or protest
Principal Balanda went on to scold those involved, telling them that they should:
“Use your words to start a dialogue rather than using your hands to destroy something.”
It’s easier said than done in this cancel culture climate. Time and time again, those who speak out against gender ideology are labeled sexist, homophobic, transphobic, and even racist.
Labels like that tend to follow you for life, likely not a burden young men about to embark on their journey into adulthood wish to carry. Brookfield Board of Education Chair Wendy Youngblood blasted the young men, claiming their actions:
“…overruns the law and the rights of some people who need tampons.”
People who need tampons are females. Don’t take the word of this 41-year-old female who has experienced the cycle of menstruation for many moons now; take the word of Merriam-Webster, which defines menstruation as:
“a cyclical discharging of blood, secretions, and tissue debris from the uterus that recurs in nonpregnant breeding-age primate females at approximately monthly intervals and that is considered to represent a readjustment of the uterus to the nonpregnant state following proliferative changes accompanying the preceding ovulation.”

The National Institute of Health defines menstruation as:
“Menstruation is normal discharge of blood and tissue from the uterine lining through the vagina that occurs as part of a woman’s monthly menstrual cycle.”
These young men were merely exercising their civil disobedience by pointing out the absolute idiocy of an unjust state law meant to infringe on what should be safe, private places for biological men.
Naturally misogynistic
Resident and Ridgefield Connecticut Pride advisory board member Alex Harris said of the incident:
“Schools are charged with imparting knowledge and understanding of reality to our youth. Menstruation and trans- or nonbinary people are simple facts of reality that threaten no one.”
Mr. Harris went on to say:
“Just as racism is socialized and not innate, so too for misogyny and anti-LGBTQIAA+ bigotry. All such feelings arise from socialized fear of ‘otherness.’ There is no reason for teen boys to fear period products…the people who require them or the use of such products anywhere.”
The young men who tore down the tampon dispenser didn’t do it out of an act of “socialized misogyny” or because they were “scared” of period products. Undoubtedly, they did it out of an innate sense of young male adolescent tomfoolery and perhaps because even in their young, immature state, they are aware enough of actual reality to understand that only women menstruate.
Ergo, menstruation products don’t belong in male spaces. I applaud these young boys, and I hope they continue to remind the good people of Connecticut that boys will be boys, ironically illustrating the reality that boys will never be girls and girls will never be boys.
