Donald Trump responded to news that Mitt Romney would not seek reelection to the Senate by lauding his achievements and wishing him well in future endeavors.
Just kidding.
The former President instead took to his Truth Social media platform and hammered the Utah Republican, saying that he “did not serve with distinction” and suggesting that he likely would have been primaried out of office anyway.
“Fantastic news for America,” he wrote. “Mitt Romney, sometimes referred to as Pierre Delecto, will not be seeking a second term in the U.S. Senate where he did not serve with distinction.”
“A big primary fight against him was in the offing, but now that will not be necessary,” Trump said. “Congrats to all.”

Trump Blasts Romney
You absolutely have to love the Pierre Delecto referenced. Senator Romney famously ran a fake X account to attack President Trump using that name.
“As Delecto, Romney, who has become one of President Trump’s most vocal GOP critics, used the account to like critical tweets about the president, while also occasionally defending himself against detractors,” the Washington Post reported in 2019.
Imagine being such a milquetoast rube that you have to hide behind a fake X handle to take jabs at your critics on a social media platform that already provides the ability to hide behind your keyboard.
I can’t believe that there are people out there that don’t love this man. Well people other than Mitt Romney, sometimes referred to as Pierre Delecto. https://t.co/UjtOHvhM2P

Reports also began surfacing indicating that Romney likes to wear a disguise when venturing out into the public as a means to avoid Trump supporters.

Romney Scurries Away
If Trump is correct, then a primary, combined with the fact that the former President said he would refuse to endorse Romney in 2024, would surely have presented the Senator with some significant issues.
Not to mention, Romney just told Utahns that the most important thing for America right now is to support Ukraine. While they both start with the letter “U,” we’re sure his constituents feel Utah is the bigger priority.
Wrong again, @SenatorRomney. The single most important thing we can do to strengthen America relative to China is to disband the Russia-China military alliance & reduce our economic dependence on China. Instead we’re driving Russia further into China’s hands by the day while… https://t.co/515Vxegkpd

So Romney had a choice – get launched out of office by about 40 points a la Liz Cheney, or simply walk away knowing defeat was on the horizon like Adam Kinzinger.
He went the Kinzinger route.
Romney, according to excerpts from a new book, took a shot at those in his party who dared to support the GOP frontrunner for President.
“A very large portion of my party really doesn’t believe in the Constitution,” he reportedly said.
Some nights he vented; other nights he dished. I got the feeling he liked the company—our conversations sometimes stretched for hours. “A very large portion of my party,” Romney told me one day, “really doesn’t believe in the Constitution.” https://t.co/khdW2iafq0

The Republican Party in Weber County, Utah, issued a formal censure of Romney in 2021 for his multiple votes to convict Trump during his impeachment trials.
Trump issued a statement around that time calling the Utah senator “a stone-cold loser!”
