Senior citizens are finally set to get their own dating show in the form of “The Golden Bachelor,” which is a spinoff of “The Bachelor” that is set to air at 10pm on Mondays on ABC this fall. Social media is currently abuzz over the reality television show after its first trailer dropped online earlier today.

‘The Golden Bachelor’

Variety reported that after “The Golden Bachelor” was officially greenlit, ABC described it as a “whole new kind of love story — one for the golden years.”

The synopsis of the show states that a “hopeless romantic is given a second chance at love in the search for a partner with whom to share the sunset years of life. The women arriving at the mansion have a lifetime of experience, living through love, loss and laughter, hoping for a spark that ignites a future full of endless possibilities. In the end, will our Golden man turn the page to start a new chapter with the woman of his dreams?”

Rob Mills, an unscripted television executive at Disney, previously talked about how exciting the casting process was for this show.

“Some of the casting interviews we got, they were just so touching,” Mills said. “It’s such a different way of doing ‘The Bachelor’ because these people are just at a totally different place in their lives.”

“There is an interesting thing about people who have hit the other end of the spectrum, who’ve lived their lives, they’ve raised their kids, some have been widowed or divorced and maybe some have never been in love,” he continued. “We thought that would be an interesting dynamic through the ‘Bachelor’ prism.”

Martha Stewart Sounds Off

The legendary Martha Stewart was recently asked if she’d be interested in being a contestant on “The Golden Bachelor.”

“If I get to see the men first,” she told Variety in response.

The Hollywood Reporter reported that this comes after 28 seasons of young people finding love on “The Bachelor.” Ideas for an older version of the long-running reality show have been going around for years, with original casting calls for seniors going out in early 2020, only to be derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

‘The Golden Bachelor’ Could Be A Hit

The show has the potential to be a great success, as the median age of ABC viewers is 61. A YouGov survey that was conducted back in 2020 found that over 40 percent of “The Bachelor” audience is older than 55 years of age.

It should be noted that Hollywood is currently in the midst of a writer’s strike that has left networks scrambling for unscripted reality show content. Nearly twenty years ago, another writer’s strike led to Donald Trump’s reality show “The Apprentice” being greenlit, according to Page Six.

“The Bachelor” has been a massive success ever since it premiered back in 2002, generating such spinoffs as “The Bachelorette,” “Bachelor in Paradise” and “Bachelor Pad.” It remains to be seen how successful “The Golden Bachelor” will be, but given how many members of the baby boomer generation are looking for love these days, we would not be surprised if this show is a huge hit!
